Illinois GOP legislators want answers about Auditor General Frank Mautino's unusual campaign expenses from when he was a state lawmaker.
Mautino was tapped last year for the role of Illinois Auditor General to replace William Holland, who retired. Mautino previously served as a Democratic representative in the Illinois House, being first elected in 1991.
Mautino has faced calls for answers about his past use of campaign funds, including large payments his political committee made to a bank and a vehicle service station in Spring Valley.
Twenty Illinois GOP lawmakers, led by Rep. Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville), released a letter Thursday seeking answers from Mautino.
"The auditor general is the fiscal watchdog of the state, and it is imperative that he operates in a highly ethical manner and we demand that he steps forward at this point in time and clear that up," Wehrli said, the AP reports.
The lawmakers said they first requested answers from Mautino about his campaign spending back in February.
Mautino issued a statement Thursday, saying he will provide a response to the lawmakers' letter after it has been received and reviewed.
