Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and his family have thus far contributed nearly $46 million in political funds for local GOP races this election cycle, according to an analysis by the Chicago Tribune.
Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin has also donated $11 million for local Republican campaigns, the newspaper reported.
The Illinois Republican Party has pushed back on the article, saying that Rauner has contributed nearly $32 million in political funds since the day after the 2014 election and had almost $5 million in his campaign fund at the end of the third quarter of 2016.
The Illinois GOP further claims that Democratic legislative candidates running in state races "have schemed to raise over $56 million" this cycle.
