Chicago Forward Lifts Funding Caps In Mayoral Runoff

The Rahm Emanuel-friendly super PAC Chicago Forward has lifted contribution limits in the mayoral runoff contest, reports Aldertrack.

The super PAC blew the cap for campaign contributions in the mayoral runoff contest after filing a disclosure notice with the Illinois State Board of Elections Friday, saying it would be spending $110,000 to advocate for Emanuel, according to Aldertrack.

Under state law, contribution caps can be lifted in a municipal race in one of two instances: a candidate donates $100,000 or more to their campaign fund or an outside organization puts that much into a race to support or attack a candidate in the race.

The cap on individual campaign contributions was lifted in the mayoral race leading up to Tuesday's election after William Kelly donated $100,000 of his own money to his campaign fund. He eventually dropped out of the race.

Illinois State Board of Elections cannot reinstall those contribution caps for the mayoral runoff race now that Chicago Forward has filed documents stating its plan to spend $110,000 to advocate on the behalf of Emanuel.

The runoff contest between Emanuel and Jesus "Chuy" Garcia will take place April 7.
