A federal grand jury's term has reportedly ended without an indictment being issued for former Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock.

The former Republican congressman abruptly resigned in March 2015 following media reports alleging improper spending of campaign funds and taxpayer money.

Although no indictment against Schock has come from the federal grand jury, which was investigating the case and ended its term on June 30, the probe could be picked up by a Springfield-based grand jury, according to reporting from the Peoria Journal Star.

In an interview with the newspaper, Schock's lead attorney George Terwilliger stressed that the ex-congressman did not engage in illegal activity.

"Our position has been and remains that while administrative errors may have been made during Mr. Schock's time in Congress, no aspect of this matter involves anything criminal," Terwilliger said.
